about

Becoming a successful manager doesn’t come easy. It takes time, practise, effort, understanding your position as manager and understanding your team’s roles as employees. Whether you’re stepping into your first managerial role or you just want to become the best manager that you can be, we’ve got some tips for you!

1. Brush Up On Your Skills

If you’re a brand new manager who’s just received a promotion or are just looking to improve in your current managerial role, it may be worth brushing up on your skills with some sort of qualification! KAL Training’s BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management will successfully teach you how to plan, execute and evaluate your own work, as well as the work of your team. Whilst completing this course you will explore the critical capabilities that make an effective manager. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have what it takes to become a successful manager.

2. Delegate Wisely

To become a successful manager, you need to learn how to effectively delegate not only the responsibility for completing tasks, but also the authority needed to ensure everything is completed by the deadline. In saying this, do not feel that you need to control every little thing that your employees do. This is called micro-managing and isn’t a trait any successful manager possesses.

3. Set SMART Goals

Be sure to set SMART goals for your team. That is, goals that areSpecific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. These types of goals will ensure your employees have something to aim for, will give them direction and purpose in their roles and also ensure they are working towards the overall organisational goals. Setting SMART goals is also a better way to regularly monitor your employee’s progress towards achieving these goals.

4. Remember – Communication Is Key

Communication is so important in the workplace to ensure everyone is on the same page and it always ensures your employees have the information that they need to do their jobs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Some managers often communicate far too little, usually this happens with big businesses where the business owners and executives are just too busy to communicate with their employees. This issue can cause major problems and in order to become a successful manager, you need to always remember that communication is key in the workplace.

5. Recognize Employee’s Achievements

Every employee wants to be great at what they do and do a good job. And when they do a good job, even if it’s a little achievement, employees want recognition for their hard work. Unfortunately, too many bosses don’t recognize and reward their employees for their good work. This can be disheartening for employees and be detrimental to you with how they decide to work in the future. There are many waysmanagers can recognize employees achievements and hard work that cost little to no money, can be implemented easily, and only take a few minutes to accomplish. Be sure to do this and you will be a successful manager!

6. Lasting Solutions, Not Quick Fixes

There is always an easy fix and quick solution to any difficult problem, and often timesmanagers are happier to go with the easiest and quickest solution to their problem. However, in the long run, this can cause some serious problems. You see, in our zeal to fix the problem quickly and move on to the next issue, we often overlook the lasting solution to our problem. Although it's easier, faster (and probably cheaper) to offer a quick fix to your problem, the next time you have an issue to deal with in your organisation, be sure to deal with the cause of the issue, instead of simply treating the symptoms.
