This course is suitable for people who are interested in working with children above the ages of 5 years or for those who need to up skill. This course teaches students how to work in the School Age Education and Care environment in a before or after school hours care or holiday program. Students are taught how to work with school age children, implement activities that will encourage developmental growth in the child and respond to their care requirements. They may work under direct supervision or autonomously. Students may also have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff members.
Students must have some idea about working with children and the components of the job, however they do not require previous experience.
This Certificate IV is a total of 12 months in duration however it is possible to complete the course earlier if you so wish. Available online, there will be a combination of theory, research projects and work based practical tasks and students are expected to work on their assignments at least three days per week. A minimum of one assignment per month is necessary to complete the course on time. As part of the course all students must carry out work placement at a before and after hours school care or holiday program centre for a minimum of 160 hours.
SStudents are required to use Moodle, our online learning system to access learning resources, lessons, assignment lists and to submit their work. We recommend that students purchase two textbooks (The Early Childhood Educator for Certificate III- (Lorraine Walker, Shelagh Miller) Caring for School- Age Children*, (Phyllis M. Click and Jennifer Parker) to assist with resourcing information for their assignments. Assessments will be related to the work place and include practical work based exercises, short and long answer questions and written assignments. Students will also be observed at their work placement by KAL Training.
All students must have a laptop or desktop computer and access to the internet for the full duration of the course.
