2018 Skills First Victorian Funding

Skills First is funded by Higher Education and Skills Group and is making vocational education and training more accessible to people who do not hold a post-school qualification, or who want to achieve a higher level qualification than they hold now. Only a handfull of private RTOs have secured a Skills First contract in 2018. To be eligible for the subsidy, you need to be a Victorian resident and meet the following criteria:

Meet one of the following citizen/residecy status:

  • An Australian citizen
  • An Australian Permanent Resident (holder of a permanent visa)
  • A New Zealand citizen

Are you any of the following:

  • a young person under 20 years (as at 1 January 2018)
  • an applicant over 20 years of age seeking an Approved Foundation skills course, unless they hold a Diploma of above or are in the Commonwealth “Skills for Education and Employment” program;
  • an applicant over 20 years of age seeking to enrol as an Apprentice (not Trainee);
  • an applicant over 20 years of age seeking to enrol in Victorian Certificate of Education or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (intermediate or senior) or
  • an applicant seeking a higher qualification than the highest qualification already held is eligible for the Victorian Training Guarantee.

Please note that as at 25th November 2013, secondary school students (excluding School Based Apprentices and Trainees) are not eligible for training under the Victorian Training Guarantee. This includes students enrolled in any government, non-government, independent, Catholic or home school.

In 2018 you are eligible to begin two government subsidized courses as long as you are not doing any more than two government subsidised courses at a time. (These limits may not apply to Apprenticeships). You can only begin up to two government subsidised courses at the same qualification level (other than Foundation Skills) in your lifetime, regardless of whether you complete them. There is no lifetime limit on the number of foundation skills courses you can begin.
